Graphite Pencil Workshop Requirements
Each attendee is supplied with the necessary paper/support required for the day. You can purchase a home kit, or loan an art kit during the day of the workshop, however if you prefer to use your own products on the day you will need to bring the following with you:
1. A selection of your own graphite pencils
A pencil range used must include all the shades between B and 9B as these are the ones that are mostly used in these workshops. The Derwent Graphic Soft set is the better choice, as some other brands may only go up to 6B/8B. KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A graphite pencil kit is provided. |
2. A clean white Eraser
A clean rubber is needed for the workshop. Make sure the rubber has not been used for coloured pencil work as this may transfer onto your art, causing damage.
KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A clean eraser is included PRODUCT AVAILABILITY: Stock available at the Workshop |
3. A selection of paper stumps
A selection of paper stumps in various sizes are recommended to help blend areas of graphite in these workshops. Ensure any paper stumps you bring have only been used with graphite and no other medium. Previously used paper stumps are better than new ones as they already have layers of graphite on them which better aids the blending process.
KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A paper stump is supplied PRODUCT AVAILABILITY: Kits are available to purchase at the workshop |
4. Emboss Tool
A must for Graphite work. Some companies sell an emboss tool kit which provides different sized 'pea heads' allowing you to create various thicknesses of indents in your work.
KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A wooden skewer is provided PRODUCT AVAILABILITY: Sets are available for sale at the workshop |
9. A pencil rubber
A pencil rubber helps you to create highlights and fine lines. The pink tipped pencil rubber, is the better option for smooth papers, as the tip is soft and will not damage the fibres in your paper. The white tip is better for abrasive paper, as it is firmer.
KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A pink tip eraser is provided. PRODUCT AVAILABILITY: Single & double ended stock are available for sale at the workshop |
Optional Products:
10. Desktop Easel
Some may wish to use an easel for a pencil workshop and if so, any flat board top would be suitable providing it is not too big and bulky. Click on the easel image to go to the Ken Bromley online art shop and view their easels. The one pictured, provides an idea of suitability, if you do not currently have a desktop easel. |
11. Daylight Lamp (Battery powered/rechargeable)
If you wish to bring along a Daylight Lamp so you can work with natural light at your workstation, please feel free. As there are no sockets at these tables, a battery powered or rechargeable light can be used if needed. For samples, visit the SAA page HERE PLEASE NOTE: Although there are no sockets at the work tables, there are a few sockets available at the venue should you need to charge a light or iPad to use during the day. Ideally ensure electricals are fully charged beforehand. |
12. Battery powered or manual pencil sharpener
A manual pencil sharpener may be your preferred option of keeping your pencils sharp should you wish to bring one along. You are also welcome to bring an electric sharpener too, as long as the noise does not disrupt others that are also working.
KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: Not provided |
14. Battery powered eraser
A battery powered eraser allows you to replace the tips and this can be of great use, helping to remove more layers of graphite pencil that manually erasing ever could. Do be aware that this may cause damage some softer paper surfaces.
