Graphite Pencil Workshop Requirements

Each attendee is supplied with the necessary paper/support required for the day. You can purchase a Home Kit to keep or Loan an Art Kit for the day, however if you prefer to use your own products on the day you will need to bring the following with you:
Derwent Graphic Soft tin of 12
A Home Kit Includes the Derwent Set of 12 Graphic Pencils Tin (Soft 9B-H)
1.   A selection of your own Graphite pencils

A pencil range used must include all the shades between B and 9B as these are the ones that are mostly used in these Workshops. The Derwent Graphic Soft set is the best choice - some other brands may only go up to 6B/8B.

KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A Graphite pencil Kit is provided.

White Rubber
Ensure your rubber is clean and used for Graphite pencils only.
2.  A clean white Eraser
A clean Rubber is needed for the Workshop.  Make sure the Rubber has not been used for Coloured pencil Work as this may transfer onto your Artwork, causing damage.

KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A clean eraser is included

PRODUCT AVAILABILITY: Stock available at the Workshop

Paper stump for Art
Paper stumps can be purchased in packs of 3 or more
3.  A selection of paper stumps
A selection of paper stumps in various sizes are recommended to help blend areas of Graphite in these workshops. Ensure any paper stumps you bring have only been used with Graphite and no other medium.  Previously used paper stumps are better than new ones as they already have layers of Graphite on them which better aids the blending process.

KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A paper stump is supplied

PRODUCT AVAILABILITY: Stock available at the Workshop

Pack of 3 emboss Tools
4. Emboss Tool
A must for Graphite work. Some companies sell an emboss tool kit which provides different sized 'pea heads' allowing you to create various thicknesses of indents in your work.

KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A wooden skewer is provided

PRODUCT AVAILABILITY: Kits available at the Workshop

Frisk graphite Tracedown
5.  A sheet of Graphite Tracedown
An A4 sheet of Graphite Tracedown will be needed for transferring the photo image on to your support. A photocopy of the subject matter is provided to make it easier to work with the Tracedown.

KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A pre-sprayed outline can be loaned if required

Single and double metal pencil sharpeners

6. A pencil sharpener
Don't forget your pencil sharpener - there are many sharpeners out there but ensure you have one that fits your pencil barrel as they can vary.

KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A pencil sharpener is provided

3 ply tissue packs

7. A pack of 3 ply tissues
A pack of plain 3 ply tissues are recommended to help with the blending process and avoids transferring pencil to hands and oils from hands to paper.

KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A pack is provided.

Soft blusher brushes
8.  A large, soft brush
A Soft brush is a must in these pencil Workshops. A cheap option is using or purchasing a blusher brush but there are also brushes sold specifically for this purpose.

KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A brush is provided

Faber Castell pencil Eraser
9. A pencil rubber
A pencil rubber helps to create highlights and fine lines when using it within the graphite's base layers The pencil rubber shown here with the pink tip is the best option as the tip is soft and will not damage your support paper fibres.

KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: A single one is provided.

PRODUCT AVAILABILITY: Single & double ended stock are available at the Workshop

Optional Products:

Desktop Easel
This A3 Arts & Crafts Workstation is a good choice as you can adjust the height
10.  Desktop Easel

Some may wish to use an Easel for a pencil Workshop and if so, any flat board top  would be suitable providing it is not too big and bulky.  Click on the Easel image to go to the Ken Bromley online Art shop and view their Easels including this one pictured to give you an idea of what to buy if you do not currently have a Desktop Easel.

PLEASE NOTE: There are 2 Desktop Easels with a non-fixed board that may be loaned, if you wish to borrow one during the Workshop, please book in advance.

Desktop Easel
A Daylight Naturalight Smart Lamp with rechargeable battery that provides up to four hours of light.
11.  Daylight Lamp (Battery powered/rechargeable)

If you wish to bring along a Daylight Lamp so you can work with natural light at your workstation, please feel free. As there are no sockets at these tables, a battery powered or rechargeable light can be used if needed.
For samples, visit the SAA page HERE

PLEASE NOTE: Although there are no sockets at the work tables, there are a few sockets available at the venue should you need to charge a light or iPad to use during the day. Ideally ensure electricals are fully charged beforehand

Winsor & Newton Artists Fixative
12. Fixative
You may wish to bring an aerosol fixative with you on the day if you wish to fix your completed portrait.

Please note: Fixative should only be used in well ventilated areas and for these Workshops, should only be sprayed outdoors to avoid others inhaling.

KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: Not provided

Derwent Battery powered pencil sharpener
13. Battery powered or Manual pencil sharpener
A Manual pencil sharpener may be your preferred option of keeping your pencils sharp should you wish to bring one along. You are also welcome to bring an electric sharpener too as long as the noise does not disrupt others that are also working.

KITS LOANED/PURCHASED: Not provided

Blue Battery powered eraser
14. Battery powered Eraser
A Battery powered eraser allows you to replace the tips and this can be of great use, helping to remove more layers of Graphite pencil that manually erasing ever could. Do be aware that this may cause damage some softer paper surfaces.
