Welcome to this comprehensive tutorial on drawing a realistic dog's eye using graphite pencils. In this tutorial Derwent Graphic pencils on Strathmore Bristol 500 Plate were used, but you don’t need these exact brands to follow the process. Any reliable graded graphite set will perform well as long as you match the grades used in each stage. What matters far more is the surface you draw on. Choose a heavyweight paper such as a hot pressed watercolour, which has a slight tooth, but make sure it is true white rather than cream; many drawing papers lean warm, and that subtle tint will dull your highlights and reduce the contrast you can achieve. A bright white sheet gives you cleaner lights, crisper detail, and a far more luminous finish when working with graphite.

​An indent tool is useful across many mediums, but it’s especially valuable for pencil work because it creates crisp highlights without the struggle of lifting graphite later. Embossing tools come individually or in sets, offering peaheads from very fine to broad, allowing you to match the size to your portrait and the level of detail you want. For this example, only one size was needed; the eye is roughly 4" square, so a tip around 1 mm produced clean, controlled marks.

​​Important Tips before you Begin

• Protection: To ensure the natural oils from your skin do not transfer onto the paper, place a clean sheet of paper like tracing paper, beneath your drawing hand whilst working. These marks can easily compromise the surface fibers and prove exceptionally difficult to lift later on.
• Preparing your pencils: Ensure your pencils are freshly sharpened before beginning. A longer lead allows for far better contact when utilizing the side of the pencil core.
• Establishing clean boundaries: Keep the initial linework around the eye bold and well-defined so you do not lose track of vital placement details as you blend and shade.
• Working with pressure: Employ firm, deliberate pressure as you build up your layers. Working with the flat side of the lead allows you to achieve dense, uniform coverage that lifts away cleanly, whereas hard, narrow pencil strokes can score the paper and make blending or removing highlights incredibly difficult.
• Mastering indenting: Ensure you apply firm, deep pressure into the paper when using your embossing tool. This keeps the recessed grooves clean and free of graphite as you shade over them, ensuring your white highlights remain crisp.
• Using a battery-powered eraser: Practice using the electric eraser on a spare sheet first to get a feel for its control and pressure. Once you’re confident in producing clean, sharp highlights, move on to your main drawing.

To begin, lightly sketch the partial outline of the eye using a 2B pencil. Keep your lines soft and easy to erase, but completely leave the top of the eye free of graphite where the indents will go. Next, take your indenting tool to create the hair texture. Press firmly into the paper and lift the tool quickly at the end of each stroke to achieve a natural taper. You may prefer to rotate your drawing surface as you work, allowing your hand to follow the organic flow and direction of the hairs comfortably.​

To make your marks easier to see, position an adjustable desk lamp at a shallow angle across your paper to illuminate the physical grooves. A heavyweight paper of 300gsm or higher will achieve the best results, as this allows you to press firmly without tearing the surface. Pressing deep ensures the grooves stay clean so that when you later apply graphite shading, it glides right over the indents. If you press too lightly, graphite will spill inside, causing your crisp white highlights to disappear.

Once your indenting is finished, darken the eye's outline using a 4B pencil. This bold outline ensures your structural guides remain clearly visible throughout the upcoming blending stages. Use the lateral side of a 2B pencil to apply a strong, uniform foundational layer, carefully following the curves of each indent. This wide angle prevents graphite from slipping into the grooves. You can rotate your paper as you work to match the eye's shape naturally.

Follow the reference arrows to apply your pencil strokes. Utilising the full length of the lead minimises harsh edges, making the subsequent blending process much easier. Do not worry about over-shading at this point, as blending will soften the overall finish anyway. If your layer looks too faint, simply repeat the application until you achieve a rich, dark tone. The deeper this background shade becomes, the brighter your white indented highlights will pop, delivering a striking, realistic effect.​

Stage 3 - Blending

Tool Used: Soft Tissue

Moving on to the blending stage, wrap a soft tissue around your index finger and gently press and sweep the tissue across the surface, always following the exact direction of your indents. This precise, careful movement softens any harsh pencil lines while ensuring you do not accidentally push stray graphite into the clean grooves. Avoid using your bare fingers as natural skin oils can permanently damage your paper.

Stage 3 - Alternative Blending Tool

Alternatively, a paper blender provides far more precision, especially when working in tighter areas. Interestingly, a well-used tortillon/stump works better than a clean one, as the graphite buildup on the tip helps smooth the layers rather than lift the graphite. Keep your graphite blenders strictly for graphite work. By blending along the path of your original indents, your white highlights will remain beautifully crisp.

Stage 5 - Deepen the eye markings

After blending, you may notice that the main structural lines have faded beneath the graphite layers. Switch to a dark 6B pencil to deepen the eye's outline and fill in the dark shadows below and inside the eye itself. Apply this rich tone precisely as indicated in the reference image, keeping the top area clear. Whilst this deep shade may initially appear stark, strengthening this central region now is essential.

Stage 5 - Second Application & Blend

Pencil Grades Used: 4B & 6B

Next, apply a second graphite layer over the fur, using a 4B pencil. Using the lateral side of the lead, repeat as before, ensuring your strokes follow the direction of each indented hair. Once this layer is down, repeat the blending process using either your soft tissue or a blending stump. Finally, use your 6B pencil to cleanly define the upper eyelid line, leaving the indents clean, ready for the next stage of the tutorial.

Stage 6 - Definition inside the eye

Moving onto the iris, use a 6B pencil to apply a base layer across the inner eye, carefully avoiding the white catchlights. Next, switch to an 8B pencil to cast a deep shadow directly underneath the upper eyelid, making sure to avoid your tiny indented hairs. Leave the bottom of the iris lighter. Next, darken the inner and outer corners of the eye to enhance its natural, curved shape.

Stage 7 - Blending

Tool Used: Tissue/Blending stump

Next, use a soft tissue to gently blend the hard edges around the outer boundaries of the entire area, allowing the graphite to fade seamlessly into the paper. This technique preserves the intensity of your core shadows whilst creating a soft vignette that prevents the drawing from appearing starkly isolated. By establishing this smooth transition, you set yourself up perfectly for lifting out clean highlights in the coming stages.

Stage 8 - Deep Shading

Pencil Grade Used: 8B

Using an 8B pencil, apply deeper shading directly above the upper eyelid and below the lower eyelid to create a striking, high-contrast tone. Whilst this dark layer may initially feel excessive, the upcoming erasure stage will soften many of these shadows. Establishing these deeper tones at this point is crucial, as they provide the necessary background contrast that will make your lifted highlights pop with maximum visual impact.​

Stage 9 - Lifting (Erasing)

Tool Used: Battery-powered Eraser

For the best results, use a full-power battery eraser to lift out the highlights. Gently work over the brightest sections to remove thin layers of graphite, always following the direction of the fur. Keep the eraser tip clean to ensure each lift stays crisp. Once finished, sweep away any loose dust with a soft brush. Repeat this process if the highlights look dull, but leave your mid-tones and shadows intact.

Stage 10 - Softening Hard Edges

Tool/Pencil Used: Blending stump & 4B

Next, use a blending stump to gently soften the points of origin on the erased highlights. Utilising the residual graphite on the tip takes away the harshness of the initial lift without muddying the area. Following this, use a 4B pencil to draw a few fine, dark hairs directly through these highlighted sections. This breaks up any artificial uniformity left by the battery eraser, integrating the bright shapes for a realistic finish.

Stage 11 - Highlights Creation

Tool Used: Vinyl Eraser

Use the sharp corner of an eraser to lift the delicate reflections in the lower iris, aiming for subtle tonal gradations rather than a solid white block. Gently blend the transitions with a paper stump. Next, move to the fur outside the eye. If you need to deepen the shadows between the highlights previously lifted with the battery eraser, carefully add a dark pencil layer to enhance the contrast without losing your bright fur details.

Stage 12 - Defining the Detail

Tool Used: Blending stump

Ensure the eye rim is properly brightened, then soften the area with a blender to establish a natural balance of light and form. Your final drawing should display a harmonious balance of deep darks, crisp highlights, and a full tonal range of mid-tones. There must be no abrupt transitions or harsh stops and starts between the pencil grades, ensuring that all values blend seamlessly across the surface for a highly polished, professional finish.

​​Beyond the Tutorial: Technique Variations

When I used to run art workshops, we covered drawing a Spaniel dog's eye using graphite pencils​. I explained the many ways to build definition using different pencil grades, while creating highlights through indenting tools and various erasing techniques. Each example below demonstrates what can be achieved by varying different approaches. Although every finish is highly effective, they reveal how technique and stylistic choices can dramatically influence the final mood, texture, and impact of the work. There is no single “right” way to create a graphite pencil portrait, each sample is powerful in its own right, but for very different artistic reasons.

This artist devoted time to indenting the paper, carefully creating the directional fur. Graphite was applied directly through tonal adjustments, without the need for blending. This approach minimised erasing and, through patient execution, resulted in a highly detailed drawing with the crisp precision of a scratchboard finish.​

This artist applied several careful light indents to the paper before layering and manipulating the various pencil grades. They also used a pencil eraser together with a battery-powered eraser to lift highlights of varying degrees of brightness, thereby creating a more soft and natural, refined finish.

The artist applied indents to this portrait but chose to create the highlights primarily by lifting the graphite, mainly using a pencil rubber. These thicker highlights add greater impact and definition to the final drawing, enhancing its overall presence and depth of expression.
