Reference Image & ​​Materials List

In this tutorial, 12 colours from the Sennelier oil pastel range are used. Similar shades can easily be selected from an existing collection by using the colour guide below to help identify corresponding tones. Whilst precise colour matching is not vital to the success of the piece, it is important to note that different manufacturers use different formulas, so your pastels might not blend or apply in quite the same way as the ones used here. To mirror the exact palette, these 12 colours make up the standard introductory set, which is easily found in many art stores or online. For the support, UArt Dark Sanded paper in an 800 grade was used for the original drawing, but the more widely available Pastelmat Anthracite is a great alternative that provides a slightly more rigid surface.

​​Important Tips before you Begin

• Protecting your work: Always place a clean sheet of paper beneath your hand whilst working to avoid accidental smudging and stop the oils from your skin transferring onto the drawing surface.
• Selecting your blending stumps: Ensure you have a selection of different-sized blending stumps ready before you start, using larger stumps to speed up coverage across broad areas and smaller, slender ones for precise control over fine details​
  
• Managing the paper surface: Avoid clogging the texture of your paper too early. Because an oil pastel painting is built up using multiple layers, it is always better to apply the pigment lightly at first and add more gradually as required.
• Handling dark pigments: Exercise caution when using deeper tones, as they can easily overpower your lighter colours. A very small amount is often all that is needed to achieve the correct balance.
• Maintaining tool purity: Keep your pastels and blending stumps clean by frequently wiping any excess pigment onto a piece of kitchen towel, which prevents colour contamination and stops your layers from becoming muddy.
• Preparation and practice: Textured paper requires a lighter touch since you do not need to apply a heavy amount of pastel to get good coverage. Always keep a spare offcut of your working paper handy so you can test your strokes before committing them to the main drawing.

​​Protecting Your Surface

Securing the paper to a sturdy board with masking tape is an essential first step to keep your work flat and prevent accidental smudging as you paint. Running the tape neatly along all four edges creates a secure frame, holding the sheet completely flat while you apply pressure with your pastels. Once the tutorial is complete and the tape is carefully peeled away, it leaves a clean, crisp border that lets you handle the board safely without touching the live pastel on the surface. Because oil pastels never truly dry, this clean outer edge is vital for protecting your work from unwanted marks. It also serves a highly practical purpose for framing, as this clean border provides the perfect area for a mount or mat to sit on without covering any of your actual drawing.​​

​​Working on a Dark Surface: Laying Your Foundations

A dark support provides an excellent foundation for a landscape, but it fundamentally alters how pigments interact when layered. Working on a dark surface reverses your standard drawing process. You switch from adding shadows on white paper to adding highlights and light values on dark paper. When lighter colours are applied first, they establish an opaque, vibrant barrier on the page, providing a bright underlayer for the deeper tones to sit upon. By initiating the composition with these light tones as a base and subsequently layering the darker colours over the top, the black surface is prevented from deadening the value of the pastels, ensuring the pigments maintain their true vibrancy, purity, and depth across the entire artwork.

Stage 1 - Sky Foundations

Colours Used: Pale Blue No.6 & Ultramarine Blue No.237

To ensure your pigments remain vibrant on a dark surface, you must apply your lighter colours first. Dark backgrounds naturally absorb deeper tones, making them appear dull. Start by laying down a base of Pale Blue across the area, working from the top downwards. Next, introduce a smaller amount of French Ultramarine. Use this darker shade sparingly, as you can easily increase the intensity later. Do not blend at this stage.

Stage 2 - Highlights

Colour Used: White No.1

To preserve colour purity, introduce layers of White pigment directly into the untouched spaces first. Once these areas are filled, you can overlap the white into the adjacent blue tones. This technique ensures a clean transition without muddying your highlights. Oil pastels transfer pigment easily, so frequently wipe away any residual blue build-up from the tip of your white pastel onto a tissue, to maintain its clean integrity.

Stage 3 - Blending

Tools Used: Fingers

To achieve a smooth finish, blend the pastels firmly using your fingertips. Move your hand steadily from left to right and back again across the paper. Allow the edges to merge naturally to create the soft, weightless effect of clouds. This specific action introduces a clear sense of movement, making the sky appear far more dynamic. If the darker blue tones begin to dominate the space, apply additional white pigment directly on top and continue blending.

Stage 3 - Sky completion

Product Used: N/A

Upon close inspection, you may still notice small flecks of the dark surface showing through the pigment. This texture can give your artwork an interesting, raw character. However, if you prefer a solid finish, you can easily remove these specks. Continue blending the area firmly, or apply a second layer of colour directly over the top. Blend this final layer until the paper surface is fully covered and the texture is completely smooth.

Stage 4 - Foundational Layers

Colours Used: Lemon Yellow No.19 & Yellow Ochre No.26

To begin your landscape layout, create a warm foundation by applying a light layer of Lemon Yellow over three-quarters of the surface. Once this base is established, add intermittent strokes of Yellow Ochre just below your horizon line to hint at the ground structure. Work sparingly with your pastels at this stage to avoid clogging the tooth of the paper early on, ensuring the surface remains receptive to the subsequent details you will introduce later.​

Stage 5 - Foundational Layers

Colours Used: Green Medium No.45 & Cinnabar Green Yellow No.42

Now begin filling in the green tonal areas of your landscape. Start by applying Cinnabar Green Yellow to establish the lighter areas before transitioning into the slightly darker, more subdued tone of Green Medium. To create a sense of balance and harmony, block in the bottom section of the paper with a light layer of this medium green. Work with a gentle touch to distribute the pigment across the surface without flattening the tooth, leaving the background paper slightly visible.

Stage 6 - Blending

Tools Used: Fingers

To blend your pigments smoothly, move your fingertips horizontally across the paper, rotating your drawing board to gain better control over your strokes if you find the angle awkward. Blending thin layers on this abrasive paper can feel quite resistant initially, but using your fingers remains the best way to create soft transitions. If you prefer to use a paper blending stump instead, select a large one to speed up your coverage across these broader areas.

Stage 7 - Adding Contrast

Colour Used: Burnt Umber No.34

Next, introduce some Burnt Umber into the bottom of the landscape to produce richer contrasts across the lower portion of the meadow. This application establishes the deep tones needed for your shadows before you eventually begin adding the vibrant poppies. Proceed to blend this brown pigment into your greens. You will find the blending process much smoother this time because the layered pastel makes it easier to move the medium.

Stage 8 - Horizon flowers

Colours Used: Mandarin No.200 & Intense Red No.220

Next, use your Mandarin and Intense Red pastels to place a collection of dots just below the horizon line. Vary both the size and positioning of these marks carefully so they look completely natural rather than uniform. Once the pigment is down, press softly over the shapes with your finger, moving it gently from side to side to create a hazy, blurred effect. Wipe your fingertip frequently to prevent transferring stray red pigment to other areas of the page.

Stage 9 - Horizon Highlights

Colours Used: Lemon Yellow No.19 & Blender

Next, add subtle touches of Lemon Yellow to restore the highlights that may have become lost beneath the red and orange tones along the horizon line. Soften the edges gently with a blending stump to achieve a delicate finish. Remember that these highlights are meant to serve as background detail, so you should avoid a total blend, as keeping the marks slightly defined helps provide essential luminance to the reds and oranges for a vibrant glow.

Stage 10 - Poppy Highlights

Colour Used: Mandarin No.200

To build your poppies, lay down a base of Mandarin first, working from light to dark to preserve the purity of the underlayer. As you move down the paper towards the foreground, increase the physical scale of the flowers to create a realistic sense of distance. These larger, closer forms require sharper definition, so loosely sketch each shape while mapping out the mid-tones before interpreting the reference photo with your own style.

Stage 11 - Poppy Mid-Tones

Colour Used: Intense Red No.220

To enhance the definition, introduce darker contrasts using your Intense Red pastel. Be particularly mindful when working on the smaller flowers in the distance, as they require only a small amount of red to ensure you do not accidentally overpower the underlying orange tones. Carefully place these deeper marks to establish the mid-tones within the petals. Notably, there is no need for any blending at this stage of the process.

Stage 12 - Bright Highlights

Colour Used: White No.1

Use the White pastel to add crisp highlights along the edges of the petals. Despite the current high opacity of this bright white pigment, the marks will be softened in the subsequent stage of the drawing, which eventually helps to accentuate the individual shape of each petal. Remember to wipe any excess pigment from the tip of your white pastel regularly, as a clean tool is vital for maintaining neat, unblemished lines throughout this process.

Stage 13 - Softening edges

Tool Used: Small Blending Stump

Select a slender paper stump, ensuring the tip is completely clean and free of old pigment before you begin. Carefully soften the sharp edges of your white pastel until the highlight becomes slightly muted, blending naturally into the surrounding red and orange tones. If you notice any excess pastel building up on the tip, simply dab it onto a tissue to prevent unwanted pigment from transferring and spoiling other areas of your work.

Stage 14 - Dark Accents

Colour Used: Burnt Umber No.34

Next, define the form of your flowers by adding small touches of Burnt Umber to establish the deepest shadows at the base of the petals. Such a dark pigment is highly powerful, so you really only need a gentle, sparse layer to anchor the shapes without overwhelming them. At this stage of the process, you will notice that the poppies are starting to appear far more three-dimensional as these rich tones make the vibrant red petals stand out.

Stage 15 - Warm Mid-tones

Colour Used: Mandarin No.200

Finalise your poppies by introducing the Mandarin tone back into the petals to restore the vibrant mid-tones. Because you have already built up several layers, if you are using a very fine tooth paper, you may find the paper resistant to accepting more pigment. Persevere with gentle pressure, but ensure you wipe any excess buildup from the tip of your pastel stick after every application, which prevents the new layer from skidding over the greasy surface.

Stage 16 - Cornflower Blue Base

Colour Used: Delft Blue No.203

Next, use Delft Blue to establish the foundation for your cornflowers. You can easily build the structure of these flowers by applying a series of individual vertical strokes across the paper. Ensure you avoid uniformity here, as varying the size of your marks is crucial for creating realistic depth, with the strokes situated further in the distance being noticeably smaller than those positioned closest to the viewer.​

Stage 17 - Contrasting

Colour Used: Pale Blue No.6

Using the Pale Blue tone, delicately apply highlights to the edges of the cornflower petals. This second layer brings out the intricate structure of the forms while simultaneously creating a convincing sense of depth through the contrasting blues. By positioning these lighter strokes against your darker foundation, you will easily accentuate the shape of each individual flower, making the foreground stand out much more effectively.

Stage 18 - Highlights

Colour Used: White No.1

To conclude the cornflowers, apply a few White highlights to the tips of the petals. It is essential to use a minimal amount of this pigment because the petals are delicate, and too much white will easily dominate your existing blues. Introducing this final tone further distinguishes the specific shape of each flower, working alongside the previous layers to intensify the overall luminosity of the scene.

Stage 19 - Deep Contrasts

Colour Used: French Ultramarine No.237

Next, introduce the French Ultramarine to enhance the overall appearance of the cornflowers. Apply this deep tone directly at the base of each form to create a bold contrast against the lighter upper sections of the petals. Establishing this tonal variance gives your cornflowers immediate depth and structure, preventing the shapes from looking flat and making them appear three-dimensional on the page.

Stage 20 - Small details - Sepals

Colour Used: Black No.23

Use the Black pastel to create the sepal at the top of the stem. Because this structure sits directly underneath the petals, it is completely blocked from the sunlight and remains in deep shadow. You must exercise caution when working with black, as the heavy pigment will easily clog the paper if over-applied. A light, precise touch is all that is required to anchor the flower stem without ruining the surrounding work.

Stage 21 - The Stems

Colours Used: Green Medium No.45, White No.1, Cinnabar Green Yellow No.42 & Small Blending Stump

Finish by adding the stems, keeping them as thin as possible. You can achieve this by applying a gentle but swift stroke starting from the base of the grass and moving upwards to meet the sepal. Work from dark to light, laying down your Green Medium first before transitioning to the lighter Cinnabar Green Yellow. Finally, add subtle highlights with your white pastel and use a blending stump to softly merge the layers into the background.

Continue to build up the stems until you have created as many as you feel your composition requires. The elements situated at the front of the scene demand far more definition than those positioned in the background.

​To reinforce this aerial perspective, you may need to soften the edges of the distant stems at this stage, blurring their shapes slightly so they appear out of focus and recede naturally into the landscape.

As you layer these overlapping grasses, you must establish deep shadows between the blades to give the meadow its structure. Avoid using a single flat tone, and completely steer clear of black, which will deaden your greens. Instead, you want to create a rich, vertical transition of colour.

​Work your deepest values, combining both Burnt Umber and French Ultramarine, right down at the roots where the ground is completely shielded from the sky. As you move upwards away from the soil, gradually lighten your pressure and blend these dark tones into your mid-tone greens, mimicking how light filters down through the field to achieve a natural, balanced weight.
