The 'Green' Artist
We have put together this page for those that wish to find out which products are environmentally and vegan friendly. Each product on this page has a dedicated article within the pages of this website and you can click the 'VIEW ARTICLE' wording next to the product name. As we add more articles, this list will continue to grow. You can also find links to other sites at the bottom of this page which have a list of vegan friendly art products if you are looking for something not covered in this website.
When researching whether a product contains animal-derived ingredients, it's essential to be aware of the code PBk9. PBk9 is a pigment index number pertaining to Ivory Black or Bone Black pigments derived from carbonized cattle bones. This is something to remember if you wish to avoid animal products.
Information given here is supplied either directly from the company website or if this information cannot be found, I may use information from an unrelated art website via search, however I will also contact the company direct so I can be sure this information is 100% correct and will then include this information in the sections below.
This page may be incomplete for a while whilst I get all the information together, some companies can take a while to respond to E-mails.

Company comments - additional information
Caran Dache Cut from California cedar, these coloured pencils carry the FSC label, a guarantee of logging that is environmentally-friendly and socially and economically endurable. Only the graphite leads contain a small amount of tallow, animal fat extract, while some NEOCOLOR items contain beeswax. However, all products respect quality and safety standards and are not dangerous for users.
Derwent do not use beeswax in any of their products. Their charcoal pencils are made from pure charcoal, clay and pigment, the wax used in their pencils is from a plant source, and the binding material is from a mineral source. Derwent’s Coloursoft pencils, Graphitint pencils, Aquatone pencils, metallic pencils, graphitone and even Derwent’s Pastel Blocks are free from animal ingredients. Artist's pencils may contain beeswax, but not always. Derwent has confirmed (6/9/18) that the wood used in their pencils are from sustainable sources. Faber Castell is not using animal based ingredients with the exception of Beeswax Crayons which contain natural beeswax. The wax is harvested sustainably and the hive and bees are left unharmed. "Carbon black" is based on oil, coal or wood. We are not using black pigments based from animals (e. g. bones). ENVIRONMENT: Virtually all the pencils produced in the main factory in Stein are coated with an environmentally-friendly water-based paint. This is even used for the raised dots on the GRIP pencils. When Faber-Castell joined the WWF Global Forest & Trade Network in 2008, the company committed to increase the proportion of its FSC® certified wood resources from the current level of 82% to 90% by 2012. This goal was in fact surpassed in mid-2010, and 95% of all wood used by the Faber-Castell Group is now certified in line with the stringent requirements of the FSC. St Cuthberts Mill - watercolour papers All materials are screened in the mill to ensure minimal environmental effect. Pulps are sourced from sustainable sources (no rainforests are harmed in making our papers), and our cotton linters are an annual crop, which are a by-product from the textile industry. Stabilo No direct animal-derived raw materials such as meat, tallow, fat, etc. are used during the research, development and manufacture of STABILO products. Although renewable plant-derived materials are predominantly used, unfortunately we cannot as yet guarantee that these are exclusively vegan raw materials. |
